Steel Valleythe purchase of the Hot Box 10 Asphalt Crack Filler Melter Applicator and a pallet of Hot Rubberized Crack FillerWhat is the Project: As the asphalt ages, cracks appear for the most part across the trail. If these cracks are not sealed the cracks widen each winter through erosion due to the freeze thaw process. These cracks which first appear as hairline cracks can widen over the years to several inches in not properly sealed. There are currently about 375 cracks on our trail excluding the 95 cracks in the McKeesport RIDC. We have filled the wider cracks with cold patch and then we want to seal all the cracks (both the wide and narrow cracks) with oil to eliminate the further widening of these cracks through erosion. What will the volunteers do: Our experienced volunteer will clean out the cracks, many of which have weeds growing in them. We will blow out the loose debris with our Ego battery powered blowers. The wide cracks, about one to one and half inches wide will then be filled with cold patch. The patch is compacted using a metal pry bar. The final step will be to seal all the cracks with melted hot patch oil.
