Mon Youghreplace a pickup truck that is 40 years old and in need of lot of maintenanceWhat is the Project: MYTC presently owns and operates a vintage 1985 Chevy pick-up, which is regularly used to transport trail volunteers over 12.5 miles of limestone trail surface and to access roughly 2.5 miles of asphalt trail surface/bike lanes. This truck was acquired over 20 years ago from government surplus and has been in regular use since acquired. This vehicle is 4-wheel drive, and has been out of service 9 out of the last 12 months due to numerous mechanical issues. This fall, after spending over $1,000 to make it road worthy, it began having electrical problems and was unavailable for use for another 2 months. It is only a matter of time before we can no longer fix it. Therefore, we believe this vehicle will require more frequent maintenance attention, which MYTC has been fortunate to be able most of the time handle it on a volunteer basis. We also believe that our volunteers time could be better spent maintaining our other equipment that we service. The age and wear and tear are major factors with repair concerns. What will the volunteers do: A new vehicle, which typically would be used at least weekly if not more often, will allow for over-the-road use to more quickly and efficiently access our entire trail section. It is anticipated that the new truck would support at least 24 volunteer hours weekly from mid-March through mid-November. It will also allow volunteers to handle most of the basic preventive maintenance tasks on it. MYTC has a robust preventative maintenance program for all of our motorized equipment. Major equipment is checked weekly and minor equipment is monitored based on use. Fluids and filters are changed by our shop volunteers annually or as specified. Our goal is to respect our volunteer’s time by having no preventable breakdowns while working on the trail.
