Clarion Little Toby

resurface 3 miles of 25 year old trail

What is the Project:

What is the Project? Briefly, what are you planning to do, and how will it benefit the trail system?

The Clarion / Little Toby Trail was created 25 years ago on a long-abandoned railroad line. In 25 years much of the original trail surface has worn away and in some places it is soft, some areas have large ruts from the spring thaw, and some areas have no gravel remaining. The trail was originally 10 feet wide but vegetation has taken over the edges and in many areas the trail surface is only 7 to 8 feet wide.

Our goal is to resurface 2.5-3 miles of the 18-mile trail in 2021. We have a local contractor who has agreed to donate his workforce and paving equipment for a day. Our volunteers will also prep the edges to remove vegetation, clear ditches, remove any overhanging branches, and clean up the construction site before re-opening the trail.

What Are You Asking the Fund to Provide? Be specific about what you're asking the Fund to support and how that fits into the overall project. Give an approximate budget for the project that shows what you’re asking the fund to provide and any other funds you’re planning on.

Our request is for assistance in funding the purchase of approximately 400 tons of AASHTO #10 crushed limestone material. We have recent quotes from local suppliers to deliver this material to the trailhead and they have offered great prices for this project -

This puts the material cost for 2.5-3 miles of trail at approximately $7500. We are asking for a grant for $x.xxx.

What Will Volunteers Do? Be clear about how much volunteer effort will be involved, along with the value of that effort compared to the materials you are asking the Fund to provide.

Our volunteers will provide the following –

  • Clear ditches 20 man hours x $28
  • Remove overhanging branches for safety 20 man hours x $28
  • Donated paving equipment 40 hours x $50
  • Donated rolling equipment 40 hours x $35
  • Donated trucking equipment 40 hours x $50
  • Donated front end loader 40 hours x $35
  • Donated and volunteer labor to lay the material 150 man hours $28
  • Detail rake the edges of the trail 30 man hours $28

Donate equipment use and volunteer total $xx,xxx
