Surface remediation and ditching after a major storm

What is the Project:

What is the Project? Briefly, what are you planning to do, and how will it benefit the trail system?

Surface remediation and ditching of the Butler Freeport Community Trail. During a major storm on May 28th the ditches along the Trail became overwhelmed, many hillsides came down blocking the drainage ditches and with the huge influx of pressure, the water found its own path washing away the trail surface in approximately 30 locations along the southern half (10 miles). While some of the most beautiful parts of the trail are along the creeks and streams on a normal day, these creeks and streams breached their boundaries and left behind it, devastation.

Repairs will benefit the trail system but make the trail safe for all. Getting off the bike and pushing through damaged sections is not attractive to those that just want a stress-free ride without interruption. Runners will also stay away due to the increased risk of twisting an ankle.

What Are You Asking the Fund to Provide? Be specific about what you're asking the Fund to support and how that fits into the overall project. Give an approximate budget for the project that shows what you’re asking the fund to provide and any other funds you’re planning on.

Specifically asking for funding to rent a mini excavator for a period of time that will allow us to ditch 10 miles of trail along with materials such as: 2A limestone, rip rap and AASHTO 10 surface material to be used for self-repair/paving. ** Budget attached.

Funding granted will give us the tools and material to complete the volunteer project.

What Will Volunteers Do? Be clear about how much volunteer effort will be involved, along with the value of that effort compared to the materials you are asking the Fund to provide

. The Butler Freeport Community Trail Council and its band of volunteers will with a mini-excavator aggressively clear the ditches, stabilize hillsides and resurface sections of the trail.

Qualified volunteers will run the equipment (mini excavator, skid loader, dump truck, and roller). The dump truck and roller will be donated by Buffalo Township. Volunteers will also shovel, rake, clear pipes and direct trail traffic as a safety precaution.

Good things come from bad. Since I sent an update of trail conditions to our database, we have had a HUGE influx of folks wanting to volunteer all willing and able to join our very active volunteers.

Budget for the May Storm Damage Remediation Project
