Complete trail repairs for Hurricane Ivan damage with limestone surface

What is the Project:

This project resurfaced three miles of the Panhandle Trail in Collier Township that had been severely damaged by storms.

As a result of 2004’s Hurricane Ivan the Panhandle Trail experienced extensive damage. Many areas were severely eroded and 100 ft. were totally washed away. A fiber optic cable was even exposed to a depth of 6 feet. AT&T eventually filled in the cable ditch but the trail surface was never fully repaired with new crushed limestone. With the greater part of the trail in disrepair a total renovation and resurfacing was needed. An Earth Day event augmented trail volunteers with Pennsylvania Conservation Corps personnel to resurface the trail and make other improvements in Collier Township.

The grant from the Trail Volunteer Fund provided partial support for crushed limestone surfacing material
