This project builds new camping shelters and reconstructs an existing shelter in Roundbottom Campground near Layton. The YRTC provided the materials and supplies and the labor was provided by the woodworking class of the Connellsville Area Career and Technical Center along with volunteers from YRTC. The project lasted 3 weeks and started at the CACTC classroom with plans and fabrication done before the actual field work. Weather was a factor along with bus and class scheduling. The area was very remote with no electricity available. The students were bused each work day from Dawson to Roundbottom (approx. 5 trail miles) by van and truck. Generators were used to power saws, nail guns, compressors, and lights. The buildings were completely constructed by students with supervision by the instructor and YRTC volunteers. Lunches were provided by the YRTC volunteers by purchase of food and transporting school lunches each day. The workmanship was excellent and the students took great pride in their work. When the shelters have cured and dried, the YRTC volunteers will paint them with preservatives to prolong the life. We will also do normal maintenance and repairs as needed and the shelters will be provided at no charge to overnight trail guests. The grant from the Trail Volunteer Fund supports purchase of materials to be used by volunteers to construct two Adirondack shelters in the Roundbottom Campground near Layton on the Great Allegheny Passage. Grant awarded July 2011
